San Juan de Colón Library & Cultural Hub

Venezuela

The library’s programs go far beyond academics:

  • Music education that nurtures creativity, discipline, and teamwork.

  • Cultural activities such as theatre, art workshops, and community events.

  • Inclusive education for children with disabilities, with tailored music and learning sessions.

  • Women’s empowerment initiatives including training and leadership opportunities.

  • Life skills development in communication, problem-solving, and civic participation.

In the bustling town of San Juan de Colón, near Venezuela’s border with Colombia, the OFELIA Library has become a beacon of hope for children, youth, and women facing the compounded effects of economic hardship, migration, and educational gaps.

What began in 2020 as “Mis Pequeños Vivaldi”, a small children’s orchestra, has grown into a multifunctional learning and cultural centre. Today, it offers a safe space where more than 130 children, including neurodiverse learners, can explore music, literacy, art, and life skills. It is also a place where women find opportunities for personal growth, volunteerism, and leadership.

By addressing both educational and social needs, the library acts as a shield against the pull of criminality, offering a nurturing environment that fosters resilience, empathy, and a sense of belonging. Plans are underway to expand the library, as the current space is too small to meet the community’s growing needs. The project will improve facilities and equip the centre with the books, technology, and musical instruments necessary to welcome and support more children, youth, and women.

Here, music is the heartbeat, but the vision is broader: to build a vibrant, inclusive hub where learning, culture, and opportunity can flourish for all.

Fundraising Campaign

Help children in Venezuela access books and education

In a town where many kids have lost their teachers and their schools are falling apart, this library is more than just a place to read. It’s a safe space. It’s music. It’s laughter. It’s a second home for over 130 children, including some with special needs and many who’ve been left behind by the country’s ongoing crisis.

What started as a simple music academy has grown into the OFELIA Library, a community-run center where kids can learn, create, and just be kids.

But the space is too small and the need is growing every day. We currently operate in a 40m² space. It’s a good start, but it’s not enough.

Every donation makes a difference.
