La Maison OFELIA
Pilot Laboratory for Languages, Cultures and Intercultural Dialogue
Le Grand-Saconnex - Geneva -Switzerland
The library will address key local needs:
- Support children’s learning with multilingual resources and after-school programs.
- Reduce the digital divide with training in new technologies for all ages.
- Preserve cultural diversity through language courses, storytelling, and cultural events.
- Empower youth and women with leadership and entrepreneurship programs.
- Promote sustainability with urban gardening and environmental workshops.
Grand-Saconnex is home to residents from 152 nationalities, yet it has no public library, no dedicated place where children, youth, families, and seniors can come together to learn, share, and connect. Today, the only option is a mobile library with a limited selection, leaving many families, especially those from multicultural backgrounds, without easy access to multilingual books, digital learning, or inclusive cultural activities.
La Maison OFELIA will change that. Housed in a restored heritage farmhouse in the heart of the commune, this intercultural, multilingual, and intergenerational library will become a living community hub, designed with and for local residents. It will combine reading spaces, digital learning labs, cultural programs, and a shared garden to encourage encounters across generations and cultures.
Opening in 2027, La Maison OFELIA will be more than a library: it will be a place of belonging where generations meet, cultures connect, and knowledge flows freely.
